I understand that essentially all of you read this blog. It has been a loooonnnnggg time. Firstly, congratulations to Dan Jr. I'm amazed that you have a child -- amazed in a good way. I still remember the days when I kicked your ass in homerun derby. At any rate, the kid is really cute. Secondly, to Mr. and Mrs. Regan, hello again. I believe the last time I saw you was in New York City by some freak chance meeting. Maggie, I hear you're doing well and good luck with the student teaching bit.
As for myself, I am currently in Norfolk, Virginia. I am an submariner and part of the crew of the mighty USS Texas (SSN 775). Texas is the newest submarine in the Navy. In fact, she is not yet a commissioned vessel. We are in the process of preparing the crew and the boat for her first submergence, which is scheduled to happen next month sometime. It is, to put it mildly, a daunting task, especially in these last few weeks in the shipyard. Northup Grumman (who has built the ship) is running 150 percent over-cost and over-time on delivering the finished product, and we are scurrying to have the boat ready for her commissioning ceremony in September (to be held in Galveston, Texas... the prez' will be there, for better or worse). The hours are long and the work monotonously boring. I'm looking forward to when she finally becomes operational and the workload is lighter.
Otherwise, life is pretty decent. While I was in graduate school, I met a Welsh girl named Caryl Richards whom I will be importing to the US as soon as she finishes her PhD. We worked together in the same physics lab. Sparks flew. Emotions ran high. We are planning to be married when she finishes her degree (which will take about another year and a half). She's a very cool person--extremely witty and very laid back.
So, I'm glad to get back in touch with you guys and Matt. Feel free to send me an email if you get the time (jjphobia@hotmail.com).
